NAAC Accreditation Explained: Why the Grade Matters

16 Mar 2026 · Mentoring Minds Team

When comparing universities, you will repeatedly see NAAC grades quoted as a mark of quality. Understanding what they mean helps you judge a university beyond its fees and marketing.

What is NAAC?

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council is the body that evaluates and grades higher education institutions in India on quality parameters including teaching, infrastructure, research, governance, and student outcomes. Accreditation is a rigorous, evidence-based process.

Understanding the grades

NAAC awards grades on a scale, with A++, A+, and A representing the highest tiers, followed by B and C bands. A grade of A or above indicates a strong, well-run institution. The grade is accompanied by a numerical score, the CGPA, which gives a finer measure — for example, an A+ with a score above 3.25.

Why it matters for online learners

A strong NAAC grade signals that the university maintains quality across its operations, which reflects in the standard of its online programmes too. Moreover, UGC norms often tie eligibility to offer online programmes to a minimum NAAC score, so a good grade is partly why a university can offer online degrees at all.

NAAC is not the same as UGC-DEB entitlement

Keep the two separate in your mind. NAAC tells you about overall quality; UGC-DEB entitlement tells you whether the specific online or distance programme is approved. You want both — a well-graded university whose programme is entitled for your session.

How to use the grade when choosing

Treat a strong NAAC grade as a positive quality signal, but always pair it with a check of current UGC-DEB entitlement for your exact programme and mode.

Why verification protects you

The single thread running through every question of degree validity is verification. A degree's worth rests entirely on the university being recognised and entitled for your programme and session. This is not a formality — it is the difference between a qualification that advances your career and a certificate that does not. Making verification your first step, every time, is the most important habit a prospective student can build.

How Mentoring Minds helps

We verify every university's UGC-DEB entitlement and NAAC accreditation before we recommend it, so you can enrol knowing your degree will be recognised. If you are unsure about any university's standing, our counsellors will check it with you, free of charge.

A good NAAC grade is a reliable indicator that a university takes quality seriously, and it underpins its ability to offer online degrees. Use it as one key factor — alongside verified UGC-DEB entitlement — when you choose where to study.
