Degree Validity

Difference Between a Recognised and an Unrecognised University

31 Mar 2026 · Mentoring Minds Team

Not every institution calling itself a university confers a valid degree. The difference between a recognised and an unrecognised university is the difference between a qualification that works and one that does not.

What makes a university recognised

A recognised university is one established or recognised under law — by an Act of Parliament or a state legislature, or declared as a deemed university — and listed by the UGC. Its degrees are valid because it has the legal authority to award them.

The danger of unrecognised institutions

Some institutions operate without proper recognition, or claim approvals they do not hold. Degrees from such bodies carry no legal standing, cannot be used for government jobs or genuine higher study, and leave students with a worthless certificate after years of effort and fees.

Warning signs of an unrecognised or fake university

  • Not listed among UGC-recognised universities
  • Promises of degrees in unusually short time frames
  • Vague or unverifiable claims of approval
  • No verifiable UGC-DEB entitlement for online or distance programmes
  • Pressure to pay quickly without allowing verification

How to protect yourself

Always cross-check the institution against the UGC's official lists of recognised universities, and for online or distance study, against the UGC-DEB entitlement list for your session. The UGC also publishes warnings about fake universities from time to time — a quick check there is worthwhile.

When in doubt, ask

If you cannot independently confirm recognition, treat that as a decisive reason to look elsewhere. A genuine university's recognition is easy to verify.

Why verification protects you

The single thread running through every question of degree validity is verification. A degree's worth rests entirely on the university being recognised and entitled for your programme and session. This is not a formality — it is the difference between a qualification that advances your career and a certificate that does not. Making verification your first step, every time, is the most important habit a prospective student can build.

How Mentoring Minds helps

We verify every university's UGC-DEB entitlement and NAAC accreditation before we recommend it, so you can enrol knowing your degree will be recognised. If you are unsure about any university's standing, our counsellors will check it with you, free of charge.

The recognised-versus-unrecognised distinction is the most important safeguard in your education journey. Verify recognition on official UGC sources before you commit, and never let urgency override that check — a valid degree is worth the fifteen minutes it takes to confirm.
